What I’ve Been Up to Lately

May 26th, 2008

I’ve been busy (…and a lousy blogger)!

First, much of the last months have been devoted to preparing for the birth of my son. Born almost a month ago now…healthy and happy! Preparation consisted mostly of reshuffling a large percentage of our belongings to make room in the house for his stuff. He doesn’t take up much room…but his stuff does.

Along the same line, we’ve decided we don’t have enough room in our current home to live like we are for very long. Don’t get me wrong, we feel blessed to have a home at all. But the fact is, between having a home work space for two adults and space for two kids to sleep and play, our 1200 sq ft home is feeling a little cramped right now. Therefore, we’ve been preparing our house for market, and saving a down payment.

If that’s not enough, I accepted a new position at Tyler Technologies about two months ago. I’m now in a management role as the Product Manager for the Special Projects Team. This has been an exciting challenge so far. I love making decisions and being the guy who’s responsible for making sure projects get done and stay on track.

This is the “catch up” post. Stay tuned for more….

SXSW 2008

March 10th, 2008

I’m not there. But, one of my best friends—and my business partner Scott Faris is! If you see this guy walking around, go introduce yourself.
Scott Faris
Then say nice things about me to each other and while buying each other lunch.

By the way, Scott and I recently finished FarisWheel 2.0. We had a lot of fun building a site for ourselves—and building it the way we wanted it—a welcome change from clients telling us what to do all the time.

How to Become an Email Processing Ninja

August 27th, 2007

Merlin Mann recently addressed Google employees and advised them to become email processing ninjas. “Inbox Zero”, based on Getting Things Done by David Allen, he advises that your email inbox should be empty when you have finished checking your email. “Checking your email” shouldn’t consist of simply scanning your inbox for new messages and opening the few that catch your eye—it should be an actionable event. Each message has a place—often that place is the trash. Make that event happen as soon as possible. He further suggests turning off your email application for the majority of the day and only checking your email a few times per day. This will help you avoid the constant interruptions of new mail and actually focus on real tasks!
